Police in Lilongwe have arrested 19-year-old Yohane Mphatso after a church “deliverance” session at Zamkutu Zion Church turned tragic, leaving a 62-year-old woman dead.
According to an article by MIJ FM, police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, says the victim, Alena Banda, was severely whipped with a wooden stick during the ritual and later collapsed. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kamuzu Central Hospital.
A postmortem has since confirmed that Banda died from trauma shock and cardiac arrest caused by the assault. Police have also recovered the sticks used in the so-called deliverance.
Mphatso is now facing a murder charge.
