Two Mpox Cases Confirmed in Lilongwe
The Ministry of Health has confirmed two cases of Mpox in Lilongwe, with both patients testing positive after lab results came back on April 16.
According to a statement signed by Secretary for Health Sam Mndolo, the first patient showed symptoms back on March 20 at Bwaila Hospital, while the second was recorded on April 9.
So what is Mpox? It’s a viral disease similar to smallpox but less deadly. It brings symptoms like fever, rashes, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes—and it spreads through cough droplets, touching infected rashes or fluids, or even through broken skin, according to health expert Maziko Matemba.
High-risk groups include children, pregnant women, those with weak immune systems, and people with multiple sexual partners. The Ministry is advising folks to avoid close contact with symptomatic people, practice good hygiene, and use protection during sex.
For now, there’s no specific cure, but symptoms can be managed. The government is working with WHO, CDC, Lilongwe District Council, and others to keep things under control.
