Severe Tropical Storm Jude to Hit Malawi—Heavy Rains & Strong Winds Expected

Severe Tropical Storm Jude is picking up strength and is expected to hit parts of Southern Malawi in the next hours with heavy rains, strong winds, and possible flooding.

According to the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) in a statement, the storm is moving west at 22km/hr and is set to make landfall in Mozambique’s Nampula Province on Monday morning before spilling its effects into Malawi. The most affected areas could include Blantyre, Zomba, Mulanje, Phalombe, Thyolo, Mangochi, Nsanje, Chikwawa, and several other southern districts.

Expect serious downpours (over 100mm in 24 hours), strong winds, and possible floods. If you live in a low-lying area, stay alert! Secure your home, avoid weak structures, and move to higher ground if necessary,” reads the statement.

DCCMS is warning people to stay away from rivers, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow any evacuation orders if issued. This storm isn’t playing—better to be safe than sorry!
