Malawi has been ranked as the 4th unhappiest country in the world, according to the 2025 World Happiness Report. The report places Malawi at position 144 out of 147 countries, highlighting ongoing economic and social challenges affecting citizens’ well-being.
The bottom five countries in the ranking include Afghanistan (147), Sierra Leone (146), Lebanon (145), Malawi (144), and Zimbabwe (143). Meanwhile, Finland once again takes the top spot as the world’s happiest country.
The World Happiness Report is based on factors such as income levels, social support, life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and corruption levels. Malawi’s low ranking reflects the struggles many citizens face, including economic hardships, inflation, and unemployment.
While Malawians are known for their resilience and spirit, the report highlights the need for improved living conditions, economic stability, and mental well-being initiatives to boost overall happiness levels.
