According to an article by Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS), the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) and Youth and Society (YAS) have welcomed the government’s allocation of K2 billion for youth empowerment in the 2025/2026 national budget, calling it a crucial step toward economic development for young people.
NYCOM Executive Director Rex Chapota emphasized that the fund aligns with Malawi 2063, the country’s long-term development plan. He also dismissed concerns that the funds will only benefit ruling party loyalists, stating that “the council represents all youths, regardless of political affiliation.”
Meanwhile, YAS Executive Director Charles Kajoloweka applauded the initiative but urged authorities to ensure that the money actually reaches young people. “We don’t want another case of funds that look good on paper but never see the light of day,” he warned.
While the funding is a step in the right direction, the real question remains: Will it genuinely change the lives of Malawi’s youth, or will it just be another budget promise collecting dust? Time will tell.
