Illovo Attributes Sugar Shortage to Cross-Border Trade and Weather Delays

Illovo Sugar Malawi has identified informal cross-border trade and weather-induced delays in the 2025 crushing season as primary factors contributing to the current sugar scarcity in the country. The company reported that traders diverting sugar to neighboring countries have created shortages in local markets, despite sufficient domestic stock releases.

Additionally, unexpected rains have delayed the start of operations at Illovo’s Nchalo and Dwangwa estates, affecting field access and slowing down harvesting activities. This has prevented production from reaching full capacity.

Illovo anticipates improvements as weather conditions stabilize and field operations normalize in the coming weeks. The company remains committed to restoring a stable sugar supply and is collaborating with stakeholders to manage the situation.
