Ministry of Education Extends Secondary Education to 6 Years

The Ministry of Education has changed the education system with the launch of a new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Under the new plan, schools will now follow a 1–6–6–3 structure, which means:

▪️1 year of pre-primary (nursery)
▪️6 years of primary school
▪️6 years of secondary school
▪️3 years of university or college

This replaces the old system, which had only 4 years of secondary school.

The change is meant to give students more time to learn practical and useful skills that can prepare them for university, work, or business.

According to Dr. Frank Mtemang’ombe, Executive Director of the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE), the new system moves away from learning just to pass exams. Instead, it focuses on helping learners apply what they learn in real life.

According to MBC Digital, the new curriculum will be start once all necessary resources have been put in place.
