Theresa Phondo Bags MK14 Million COSOMA Grant for International Music Project

Malawian artist Theresa Phondo has received a major boost for her international ambitions, after being awarded MK14,091,600 by the Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) through its Copyright Fund.

Phondo’s project, titled Theresa Phondo’s Collaborative Music Event in Nigeria, is among 18 approved initiatives in the fund’s 5th call, which supports creative and cultural projects across the country.

Phondo received one of the biggest individual grants in the latest round, second only to ZEEYA Creations’ MK13.7 million for their “Protect Your Hustle” initiative and Pope Mzumara’s MK13.2 million for a heritage hub in Rumphi.

Other creatives who also received grants include:

  • Chimwonechi Chisiza (K8 million) for Amplified Voice in Lilongwe,
  • Farai Chazima (K8.8 million) for supporting vulnerable children,
  • Daniel Lufani (K5 million) for The Dan L Talk Show,
  • and Renard Mapemba (K10 million) for the Phalombe Music Festival.

In total, COSOMA disbursed over MK161 million to various artists, schools, and organizations working on cultural festivals, music events, heritage preservation, and more.
