As anticipation builds for the premiere of Welcome to Maula Prison on May 2, 2025, the Malawian film industry finds itself embroiled in unexpected drama.

Tumpe Nigel Ntaya, popularly known as Phwedo, took to social media to express his frustration over perceived biases within the industry (clearly targeting Dorothy Kingston — president of the Film Association of Malawi).
In a now deleted post, he hinted at favoritism and questioned the unity among film professionals, stating, “One day, I will spill the beans about the biases in the movie industry.”

In response, Dorothy addressed the situation with a call for professionalism and unity. 👀

Welcome to Maula Prison, produced by Kendall Kamwendo and the team behind School Days, is a significant project shot within Maula Prison in Lilongwe. The film aims to shed light on prison life and rehabilitation efforts in Malawi.
