A fire broke out at a Catholic University of Malawi (CU) hostel on last night, leaving students in shock as they watched their belongings go up in flames.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started shortly after 7 PM when a student plugged in their phone to charge. The device reportedly sparked, setting off a fire that quickly spread to clothes and other flammable materials in the room.
Students say they tried to contain the fire, but things escalated fast. To make matters worse, the fire department only arrived around 9 PM—a full two hours later, by which time the damage was already done; according to reports.
The University is yet to share details about the incident.
